Happy People at Family Hearing and Balance Center: Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Akron ohio

It’s so nice to work with such a dedicated staff that are in it for the right reasons. I receievd the below note from Dr. Amy Welman, who is one of our Clinical Audiologists, in our Akron office. I am please to share her thoughts and how she helped people with their “quality of life” Thanks Amy!!                                                                                                                     Rich

Hi!

I wanted to just give you a quick hello and tell you how happy my patients are with Resound products.  Over the past few months I have fit several digital Resound Alera hearing devices. ( love the volume and prog button in one) and still loving the remote mics. I have fit 2 new pt’s with their first pair of hearing aids as the remote mic and one female patient reported “it’s so much smaller than I had expected, I’m so pleased”.   I have a young patient in her late 20’s who attends business meetings on a weekly basis and she uses her remote mic “all the time”.  She will nod or laugh in response to people’s comments who are sitting on the far end of the table and her co-workers have to ask HER what other’s are saying now.  She loves her phone clip, uses it in the car everyday and streams music from her iPhone every chance she gets.  Thanks!

Opening our “eyes and ears” to solutions: By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D family Hearing and Balance Center and Cardinal hearing Centers

Stories like this are so nice to share….. Thank you Kristie.

Kristie Dannemiller-Smith is a Clinical Audiolgist at Cardinal Hearing Centers.

“I saw a patient today for his hearing device fitting. He has been a patient of ours for several years and has worn a hearing device in the right ear only since childhood due to significant hearing impairment in that ear due to meningitis. He has a significant hearing loss in the right ear and his number one struggle is dealing with localization and noisy environments. I fit him with the Phonak CROS system (with an FM transmitter on poor ear and a FM receiver in the better ear).

He was weary at first since he has not heard anything on that side for years and did not believe that he would be able to pick up sounds on the left side at all. I turned the microphones on both hearing aids on and started to talk to the patient with his eyes closed. He opened his eyes in pure disbelief!!  He said for the first time for as long as he could remember, he was hearing from the left side. We even held a phone up to the left ear and he was able to hear the dial tone through the transmitter. He now is a believer and cannot wait to try the new hearing devices out at home….”

This patient made my day!!  Kristie

Thank you Kristie for sharing this story that was obviously a great moment as an Audiologist!! So proud to have these opportunities to help those hear to their fullest potential!

Rich

Lack of Trust

I was leaving church on Sunday, and a previous patient walked up to me letting me know that she was going to make an appointment with our office. I smiled and said that we are always glad to help, and asked her what was going on.

She stated that she can’t hear and she is getting tired of it. She looked at the newspaper and there was a page full of ads offering ‘to-good-to-be-true’ deals. She asked why we didn’t do ads. I pointed out first to her that there are markets where ads are very useful and helpful, then I explained to her that we don’t do them here because it isn’t our job to sell hearing aids the way they advertise. We evaluate, and we test, and finally we educate with the best options. That is our job. If we do that well, then in the end it’s going to be everyone’s decision about buying a hearing aid. She smiled while waving her fist in the air, “That’s good because I don’t trust those ads.”

It made me question where that trust disappears to sometimes. Lack of trust can happen when one loses control of a situation, or is required to confront something new and unfamiliar. Control and the familiar are like warm blankets that surround us, and they make us feel that the world is safe. When that sense is lost, we begin to question with suspicion as a way to fight back, and hold onto what is important to us. Our trust, or lack of trust can sometimes be the only control that we have left.

When a person in front of us has lost that control, I believe that we are called to be leaders. In that leadership one finds a way to empower the person in front of them. When one loses control, the possibilities can be murky, if not invisible. That leader should be a light to those possibilities no matter how small. The solution will not make it the same as it was before, but it can be solid ground in which to heal and start anew.

In that relationship, the possible becomes the warm blanket. Empowerment becomes the warm blanket. In the possible, one’s control is rooted in the way things can be, and not just the in way things were. A warm blanket is the best thing to give someone who feels they have been left out in the cold, and needs something to trust.

Audiology and Hearing Story at Laurel Lake, Hudson Ohio By: Dr. Richard S. Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center and Cardinal Hearing Center

It’s so nice to be able to help those with hearing loss at Laurel Lake. Below is a story that one our Audiologists, Kristie Dannemiller-Smith, Ma., CCC/A shared with me.

“I saw a resident in the clinic and she is doing great. She has been able to hear better in the dining hall, but most importantly, she uses her phone/Telecoil setting in her hearing aids for the community room functions. The induction loop in the community room works great with the telecoil in the hearing aid and she said “everything came in loud and clear”. Just wanted to share a feel good story with you!!                                                                      Kristie

It’s truly a pleasure to provide services to a facility that is truly dedicated to it’s residents. The induction loop in the community room is a rarety in today’s senior living faciltiies. Laurel Lake shines with these outstanding services!!

“Hearing the Potential of Life” by Dr. Richard S. Reikowski, Au.D, Family Hearing and Balance Center, Akron Ohio

Amy Welman, Au.D.

Daily, we have the honor of helping people to see the potential in hearing the world around them, especially when it is hidden due to the dulling of a bodily sense. Throughout a hurried, and busy day, we have to be constantly self-aware that there are never routine appointments. Routine can make it too easy to miss the real joys in helping those with hearing loss. I am proud to share just one of these stories with you by our Audiologists, Dr. Amy Welman, Au.D. Great work Amy!

Yesterday I saw a woman for the first time who was referred to us by a close family friend who is currently our patient.  She felt that she could hear fine, but her family constantly “picked on her” for not hearing them and they say her TV is too loud.

After testing and counseling her about her moderate hearing loss, she was hesitant but interested in trying hearing aids “if it would make her family happy”.   When she had the hearing aids on, her daughter talked to her and she started giggling because she could hear so much better than she had expected.  She said “everything is so clear!”  She admitted that her daughter was right and she’s glad she cared about her enough to make her come in.

We always welcome your stories as well……

Hearing and enjoying Christmas By Dr. Richard Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center Akron, Ohio

Such great moments when we can be with family and loved ones over this past joyous holiday, Christmas. To enjoy hearing our family share stories and laughter, hearing the wrapped gifts opening, to hear and smell the foods cooking in the kitchen, enjoying church services truly make the experiences of Christmas special. It’s a pleasure to be a part of helping those with hearing loss to enjoy these moments. I am ever encouraged by those that allow us to serve their hearing needs, that we are doing things right. Focusing efforts toward what is important and meaningful to each person is our goal. Shouldn’t this be the case in all that we do?

I love the stories that patients share of the moments that were made better with improved hearing. Please, share some special “hearing” moments that you had over Christmas….

“The Sound of Music” by Dr. Amy Welman Family Hearing and Balance Center Akron, Ohio

“The sound of music”.

A patient was fit with her first pair of hearing devices after years of struggling to understand friends and family.  She especially missed enjoying plays and musicals, which is a favorite hobby of her’s.  A few days after receiving her new hearing devices she attended a play and she told me “The music sounded wonderful and I could understand the actors!  My friends are very pleased that I can understand them, and I have so much more confidence talking to people at work.”   This patient helped me to remember that hearing isn’t just a way of communication, but it opens the doors to new relationships and can help bring the “music” back to someone’s life.

Thank you Amy for this post!

Our pets help us to hear……”Caleb the cat”…. Dr. Richard S. Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center, Akron, Ohio

How a cat can help us to hear sounds around us? As you can read from the comments below, Caleb the Cat, does an outstanding job of helping her owner become more aware of the person that is working on her yard. I love stories like this!

I welcome you to share your stories with us of how your pet helps you to hear.                     Merry Christmas!

Hearing Sensitivity, Noise, and Tinnitus: Dr. Richard S. Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center, Akron Ohio

We see many people that express concerns enjoying the things that many of us may take for granted, because of their sensitiveness to noise. For instance, not enjoying dinner out because the restaurant is too noisy or the music is high,  going to a baseball, football, or basketball game because of the noise levels, attending church services because of the music, organ, and singing, problems going for walks because of the noises of cars or emergency vehicle sirens going by, can’t enjoy a movie in a theater due to the noise levels. These issues are very real for those with hearing sensitivity. We also see most of these people exhibit tinnitus, or ringing/buzzing sounds in their ears.

I hear often, that those with hearing sensitivity problems also comment, that their tinnitus worsens with noise. This causes a change in lifestyle whereby we don’t go to church, restaurants, movies, social areas, or walks with family and loved ones because of noises and thus negatively affects our emotions and tinnitus. It’s our goal to serve as a resource to help with these problems and to improve ones quality of life. In our Centers, we focus toward learning about each person, how their hearing sensitivity impacts their quality of life, thoroughly assessing the hearing system and tinnitus, and working together to offer a treatment plan in whatever fashion is best suited for each person. Treatment plans may include suggestions for noise control, custom musicians molds, noise attenuation, the Neuromonics device, and others. We’re here to help

It always remains our goal to serve as an advocate and a means to improving quality of life.

Digital Hearing Aids and Quality of Life: Dr. Richard S. Reikowski, Au.D Family Hearing and Balance Center, Akron Ohio

Digital Hearing Aids, what do they mean to you? Often, thoughts of cosmetics, cost, and changes in a persons life come to mind. As an audiologist, I initially may lean to other factors, such as improved communication and quality of life. I also think of relationships and being successful and safe in the work environment. I also think of the extensive and advances in digital technology that help people to hear within noisy areas, over the phone, at work, church services etc. Another thought comes to mind of how to make such detailed adjustments on today’s advanced hearing aids for automatic processing, frequency range settings, as well as blue-tooth abilities.

Most importantly, in order to serve as an audiologist most effectively, we need to develop a trusting relationship with each person. This relationship begins with open communication and conversation of what is on the person’s mind, how does their family affect their lives and many issues involving the hearing loss. We also are required to answer, with honesty, how we can serve as the facilitator (audiologist) to lead the person to successful solutions. This starts by answering each question of cost, cosmetic concerns vs. benefits and the list goes on and on. We are to focus true efforts toward the best successful outcome as well as attempt to do this without tiring and remaining positive each visit…..
